Jul 01, 2003· A very cool feature, I would say. One great feature of the Gorton, is the spindle spline lash adjuster. This makes boring chatter free. I have used many BP J-head mills for boring holes, and I can see the rigidity limitation and the noise that comes from spline lash. The Gorton seems superior in this area. Oct 21, 2007· That's a early model 9J Gorton mill you have there. The one I had was a 1938 vintage, very close to the one you are looking at. Mill definitly has No. 10 B&S taper in the spindle. Looking at your pictures, it may have the collet adapter in the spindle for the gorton collets. X-Y feed is common on these mills.

The 8D spindle most likely has the Proprietor Gorton taper, as unabiker mentioned, but a few out there may have a No. 7 B & S taper. I doubt any have a No. 9 B & S taper.
